Description

Delicious and very traditional Irish soda bread. A few years back, my workplace was hosting their annual Irish Soda Bread contest. Well, needless to say, this delicious little baby won me first prize. With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, I highly recommend you trying this recipe. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Caraway Seeds
  • 1-½ teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1-½ cup Buttermilk ( Or Up To 2 Cups Until Dry Ingredients Are Wet)
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, Melted
  • 2  Eggs
  • 1-½ cup Raisins (Equal Amounts Of Golden And Dark)

Preparation

First, mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Next add wet ingredients and then raisins (it works best with your hands). You may need extra flour to move dough around.

Pat into a round loaf shape and score the center with an “x” design. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 325ºF for 45 minutes to 1 hour (my oven takes over 1 hour). It should be golden brown and a knife should come out clean.

Serve with yummy Irish butter.

Update: I make this soda bread several times a year now, as it is my go to recipe for soda bread. I made a mistake a few months back, and added baking powder, instead of baking soda. In a panic (without thinking), I went ahead & added the soda too, since the dough hadn’t gone into the oven yet. Ironically, it was the best loaf yet! The baking powder gave it a bit of a lift, and made it a little lighter. I now make it this way every time. Still just as delicious, except not quite as dense.

This Irish Soda Bread is outstanding! I did a trial run on soda breads and this one the big hit. When I baked it for a St. Patricks Day Lunch for 55 people I made 2 loaves. Everyone complimented me and a few wanted the recipe! I will use this recipe forever, such a simple recipe, yet unbelievably amazing!

This is now my go-to Irish Soda Bread recipe. IT IS DELICIOUS! I was unsure of the caraway seed, but it is wonderful in the bread. I’m making my second loaf for a St. Patrick’s Day party on Monday. Thank you Christina.

A dense, sweet soda bread that was gone in less than 24 hours. Made it the 1st time without caraway seeds b/c I didn’t have any, but included them the next time & it definitely added something special. Goes great with soup or stew!
