Description

Make fair-style kettle corn at home. The secret to making it taste and look just like the county fair is the type of popcorn kernel you use.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cups Vegetable Oil
  • ½ cups Popcorn Kernels
  • ⅓ cups Sugar
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt

Preparation

Add 3 kernels of corn and oil in a large pot over medium heat. After those kernels pop, add the rest of the kernels and sugar to the hot oil and give it a quick stir. Cover the pot with a lid. Once popcorn starts popping, pick it up and give it a quick shake every few seconds until popping slows down, between 3-4 minutes. Remove immediately from heat and pour into a large bowl. Sprinkle with salt and serve immediately. Do not make the mistake of removing the pot from the heat without transferring to a bowl. Due to the high heat of the pot, if you don’t transfer the popcorn, it will caramelize and perhaps burn. Also, do not attempt to make a batch of this in a Dutch oven.

Note: if you would like the balloon-type of popcorn served at the county fair, use “mushroom kernels” which can be found online.
