This easy recipe tastes just like the stuff from the fancy fro-yo chains, but for a fraction of the cost!
- Make sure your ice cream maker has been in the freezer for at least 24 hours before use.
– To strain the yogurt beforehand, line a strainer with paper towels, and place the strainer in a medium-sized bowl.
– Scoop the yogurt into the paper towels and place in the refrigerator overnight.
– Once yogurt is strained, transfer to a bowl and whisk in the sugar until well combined. Add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter, less tart fro-yo.
– Transfer mixture into your ice cream maker and let it churn for 20-30 minutes.

I have made this with fat free Greek yogurt with wonderful results. I also typically use less sugar – usually about 1/4 cup to keep it super tart. And last tip: I skip the straining step altogether since the Greek yogurt is pretty thick as is. Which means I can have frozen yogurt without having to wait overnight!

Have you tried it with fat free greek yogurt? Also do you have to eat it right away or can your freeze it? Sometimes frozen yogurt out of the freezer is really hard.

sweettooth – made the cherry again last night, because it’s my fave, but I want to do a lemon version next. I’ll let you know how it goes! This is better than any Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s that I’ve ever had, and I considered myself to be an ice cream connoisseur prior to my weight loss surgery. Draining the Greek yogurt overnight really gives it that satisfying creaminess you’re looking for in full-fat ice cream. Thanks for posting this one!

I’m glad you enjoyed the recipe — it really is SO easy and SO good! I like the idea of adding frozen cherries — I’m definitely going to need to try some fruity versions of this!

I made this over the weekend. Fabulous! This will now be my “ice cream” of choice. I added sugar free cherry syrup and fresh frozen cherries to mine, since I’m a weight loss surgery patient. The joy of the higher protein with the Greek yogurt and no sugar made this even better. THANK YOU! So easy and delicious!
