Description

There is no shortage of everybody’s favorite crumbly topping in this version of the old-fashioned classic!

Ingredients

  • 8 whole Large, Tart Apples, Peeled & Cored
  • 1 teaspoon Grated Lemon Zest
  • 1 Tablespoon Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • ¼ cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • _____
  • FOR THE CRUMB TOPPING:
  • 1-½ cup Flour
  • ¾ cups Sugar
  • ¾ cups Light Brown Sugar, Packed
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 1 cup Oatmeal
  • 2 sticks Cold Unsalted Butter, Diced

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Slice the apples into bite-sized chunks. Place in a large mixing bowl and combine with the lemon zest, lemon juice, 1/2 cup sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Toss to combine and pour into a baking dish big enough to fit all the apples.

To make the crumb topping, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the flour, sugar, light brown sugar, salt, oatmeal and butter. Beat on low for 1 to 2 minutes, until the butter is broken up into small bits. Crumble the mixture evenly over the apples.

Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment, and bake for 1 hour, or until the topping is brown and the apples are bubbling.

I went apple picking today and came right home and made this! It was absolutely wonderful! For some reason I had a lot of crumbs left over, but we nibbled on it while we waited for it to bake! Really great recipe! (:

I made a half-batch of this the other night for my crisp-loving hubby. His verdict?? Good, but too sweet. I had seen other comments on here about reducing the sugar, but wanted to try the original recipe first. I was shocked by the sheer amount of butter, and ashamed when I realized I had eated about a quarter a stick of butter! Still, it’s a very good recipe! And maybe worth the butter shame!

I made this last night and it was absolutely delicious! I cut back on the sugar from 1/2 cup to 1/4 cup. Then I sprinkled some cinnamon sugar on top once I put the crumb topping on the apples. Next time, I would probably cut down the topping amount. I placed all my apples in a pie dish, and I had twice the amount of topping that I needed. I really piled it on, and I still had a bunch left!

Oh my word!!! This recipe is hands down the BEST apple crisp I have EVER had! It was so simple to make (I even let my 4 & 6 yr old help) and tastes incredible. Had it for Thanksgiving in 09 and made it again for friends who loved it & asked for the recipe. Perfect amount of topping (altho I must say I’m tempted to double it, since our family is all about the crisp) add some ice cream on top and it’s perfection!

This recipe turned out delicious, but I used 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar with the apples. It was just right for us.

So, so good! Make this one for sure – my husband even liked it and is not a big fan of apple crisp. I made it as written and think it might be just as good with less topping – there was ALOT – but it’s delicious so maybe it’s worth it.

This recipe was the perfect combination of crumble and apple. My personal favorite apple crisp recipe involves a double crust…my husband’s favorite is lots of apples with a little crust…this recipe made us both happy! Thanks for sharing it!
