I based this hot chocolate on a recipe I got from my friend Tracy Pace. It is thick, rich, velvety, and everything hot chocolate should be. For an extra special treat, serve with whipped cream and your favorite crushed candy cane or candy bar on top.
Combine all ingredients in a large pot over medium heat and stir with a whisk until all the chocolate chips are melted. Blend together with a handheld blender or mixer until smooth and creamy. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to a week.

If this recipe is too rich for you, you can take out the half and half and the cream and the butter. Then add an extra quart of milk (that makes 1 gallon of milk total) and pint of water. This shaves a little money off the total cost and tones down the richness factor.
