This is unlike any other trifle you have had…more like a creamy strawberry shortcake, with the mashed strawberries and sour cream. Seriously, my favorite summertime dessert. This is ALWAYS a hit!!!
Cook cake according to box instructions, using 2 round cake pans.
Before cake has completely cooled, cut each cake in 1/2, so you end up with 4 round layers.
Mix together strawberry jello, 1/2 cup boiling water and sugar. Add sour cream to the mixture. Mash strawberries well, and add to the mixture, finally stirring in the vanilla.
Take the trifle bowl, add some of the strawberry mixture, then 1 cake layer. Repeat layers, so that you end up with the strawberry mixture on top. Place in fridge for 24 hours, and then top with cool whip before serving.
