I grew up in a small farm town in NJ. This is a recipe passed on to my family from the wife of one of the peach farmers.
Put butter in a deep casserole or baking pan and place in a 350ºF oven to melt. Add half of the sugar to sliced peaches and set aside.
Mix remaining sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, and milk to create a batter. When butter is melted, pour the batter on top. Do not stir!
Place peaches on top. Again, do not stir. Bake for 1 hour or until crust is golden brown. Batter will rise to the top during baking. (Tip: Place casserole in a shallow baking pan or on a cookie sheet in case the batter spills over.)
Best served warm with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream.
