Description

Cake-like brownies topped with divine fudge-like chocolate frosting, just like my mom makes it. This is great because it makes enough to feed a large crowd.

Ingredients

  • ½ cups Butter Or Margarine
  • 4 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • ½ cups Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 2 cups Flour
  • ½ cups Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • FROSTING
  • ¾ cups Butter Or Margarine
  • 6 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • ½ cups Buttermilk
  • 6 cups To 6 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla

Preparation

Grease and flour a jellyroll pan. Preheat oven to 375*.

In a sauce pan combine, 1/2 c butter, 4 T cocoa powder, oil and water. Bring to a boil.

Meanwhile combine flour and sugar in a bowl.

When chocolate mixture has come to a boil, stir and then pour into the bowl with flour/sugar; combine.

Then add 1/2 c buttermilk, 1 t vanilla, soda and eggs.

Mix together batter (it will be runny) and pour into the prepared pan. Bake 15 minutes.

About 10 minutes before cake is done start the frosting.

FROSTING

In sauce pan melt 3/4 c butter, 6 T coca, 1/2 c buttermilk and bring to a boil.

Take off stove and mix in powdered sugar (with electric hand-held mixer to get out the powder sugar lumps) and vanilla.

Pour the warm frosting over the hot cake as soon as the two are finished. Smooth with a spatula to evenly cover the brownies and let cool. After cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar to decorate.

I have to admit that the original recipe had less frosting but I LOVE frosting (and end up leaving a bunch in the bowl to scrape out with the spatula and eat) so this recipe is 1.5 times the original. ;)

My Mom’s measurements for a thin frosting layer is this: 1/2 c butter, 4 T coco, 1/3 c buttermilk, 1 lb (4 1/2 c) powder sugar.

Try this if you are less of a frosting lover.

Wow! I love these brownies. I’ve been looking for a great Texas Sheet Cake recipe and this is the best I’ve tried. Thanks CamRose!!

Alright, decided to go with the amount in the ingredients list for the frosting. What can I say? To sum it up…..thanks a lot CamRose, you just completely ruined my diet!
I made the cake it in a really wide pan with 2 inch sides and I can’t really get more specific or else I would have to go measure and I can’t do that because I snitched too much frosting, which happens to taste like fudge, and I can now no longer move.
I loved the balance between the the cake and the frosting. The cake isn’t too sweet so it offsets the fudgy frosting well. It is beautiful sprinkled with powdered sugar and the only thing I might try different next time is adding some nuts…..maybe.

Is it just me or does the amount for the ingredients not match up with the amount in the directions?

Very moist and delicious cake. I did reduce the amount of frosting and it worked great!

I took this to the lake this weekend as my contribution to the group dinner and people would use a knife to cut one piece in half so they could try it and they ended up snatching the other half before anyone could get it! It disappeared FAST. I wanted to make a batch for work but didn’t trust myself to “not” eat it all.

This truly is one of the most yummiest, glorious, FABulous sweets EVER! I do have to say, and I think this was my personal preference, I ended up removing about 2 cups of frosting from the brownies – it was just too much frosting for me. I put the extra frosting in the fridge but had to throw it away because I couldn’t stop eating it (I’m a chunky girl who doesn’t need to be eating spoonfuls of frosting – it’s that addictive!). Thanks for posting this Texas Sheetcake (I live in Houston so well call it Texas Sheetcake). :-)
