The only rule in my kitchen is “Make it from scratch, and make it your own.” This is a simple bread recipe. Also good for making scones (fried bread). Makes three loaves of bread.
Put the first three ingredients (yeast, sugar and warm water) in a bowl to activate the yeast.
After about ten minutes, add the shortening, salt and milk. Then add one cup of flour at a time (6-7 cups, depending on humidity).
Knead bread and roll into a ball.
Put the dough in a greased bowl for one hour.
Punch down, divide into 3 parts, and roll into loaves. Place in greased bread tins, and let rise again for about 45 minutes.
Bake at 350F for about 30-40 minutes.
It never hurts to lightly oil or butter the tops when they come out of the oven.
