A winning combination of cheese and garlic that tastes amazing when paired with pasta
First, so no one gets confused, allow me to point out that you may use pretty much any type of sliced cheese you want for this (hence just “cheese” in the ingredients). Personally, I like to use cheddar and Swiss (weird but good) along with some ground parmesan, but you can use whatever (at Wal-Mart they sometimes have bags of “Italian Cheeses” for just a few dollars, which are tasty too). And you can add more or less cheese depending on how much you like (personally I like a lot but not everybody does).
Back to the recipe.
Pre-heat oven to 350F.
Cut the French bread completely in half length-wise and butter the face generously (you know, the part that was inside but is not anymore).
Sprinkle garlic salt on the face (also generously, you want to be able to taste it!)
Cut cheese into thin slices and cover the face (if using ground parmesan sprinkle that on now, along with the basil and/or parsley). Add the garlic cloves if using.
Bake for 5-15 minutes, just until cheese is melted and the whole kitchen smells delicious.
Serve, sliced into rectangles (or trapezoids, you pick) as a side to pasta or other Italian food.
I should point out, the number of servings for this recipe varies depending on how thickly you slice the bread, but usually you can get 8-10 generous slices out of a whole loaf. And don’t worry if you don’t have the right kind of cheese or leaf or whatever, just experiment and make what you please. Maybe one of these days I’ll try it with meatballs… now there’s a thought!
