Description

This is an easy pastry recipe that has been a holiday favorite of my family for years. I think it’s a Swedish recipe. It is wonderful for brunch. Real butter is a must.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE FIRST LAYER:
  • ½ cups Butter
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Water
  • _____
  • FOR THE SECOND LAYER:
  • ½ cups Butter
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Almond Flavoring
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 3 whole Eggs
  • _____
  • FOR THE ICING:
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Soft Butter
  • ½ teaspoons Almond Flavoring
  • Cream Or Milk To Spread
  • ½ cups Almonds, Sliced Or Slivered, To Garnish

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

For the 1st layer, cut the butter into the flour. Sprinkle in the water and mix to form a smooth dough. Round into a ball, divide into 2 parts. On a greased cooking sheet, pat dough into 2 strips measuring 3 inches by 12 inches. Set aside.

For the second layer, place butter and water in a saucepan; bring to a rolling boil. Add the almond flavoring. Romove from heat, add the flour, stirring quickly until it forms a soft ball. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Spread half of the mixture over each pastry strip. Bake 60 minuters until crisp and golden brown. Cool and frost.

To make the icing, mix the powdered sugar, soft butter, and almond flavoring. Add enough milk or cream to spread. Frost pastries.

Sprinkle wit slivered or sliced almonds. I sometimes decorate them with marichino cherries for a more festive look.
