Description

Irish brown soda bread is also known in Ireland as the staff of life. I make this bread on St. Patrick’s Day every year to go with my Irish dinner. I make it throughout the year, too! It is so good, and so good for you. It’s very easy. You should make some soon.

Ingredients

  • 1-¾ cup All Purpose White Flour
  • 1-¾ cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 4 Tablespoons Toasted Wheat Germ
  • 3 Tablespoons Old Fashioned Oats
  • 2 Tablespoons Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, Chilled And Cubed
  • 2 cups Buttermilk

Preparation

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Butter or spray a 9″x5″x3″ loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the first seven ingredients (dry ingredients). With two butter knives or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles crumbs. Stir in buttermilk until it forms a soft dough. With a wooden spoon or spatula, transfer the dough to the prepared loaf pan. Bake until bread is dark brown and a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Turn out onto a cooling rack. Turn right side up to cool.

Delicious with honey butter or jam! Try it toasted, too!

Excellent. I was looking for a dense, moist brown bread. This was exactly what I had in mind, and it’s incredibly easy to make! This bread will become a breakfast staple at our house.
