A family holiday get together must have. I am usually in charge of making the yeast rolls and noodles. Recipe handed down from my maternal great grandmother.
This is best mixed in a large crock, but if you don’t have that, a large bowl will do.
Mix the warm water with yeast. Mix well.
Add sugar, salt, egg and melted oleo (margarine). Little by little add the flour until you have all 6 cups incorporated.
Mix and knead in bowl. You can coat with a little oil and cover with kitchen towel.
Set in a warm kitchen and let rise. (Each rise takes about an hour) Once risen, punch down and let rise again.
Makes into rolls, place in buttered baking container, and let rise.
Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and baste with butter. Enjoy!
P.S. Instead of Oleo, you can use stick butter or margarine.

Thank you so much for sharing your Grandmother’s recipe. I made two batches of these rolls on Thanksgiving morning. My family loved them. We had some leftover and they made great rolls for leftover ham sandwiches. Thank you so much for making my first try at yeast rolls a success.
To Anne McCoy: yes, you can use butter. I used it in mine and they were great!

I wonder if butter would work? Either way, what a precious gift to receive from family. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!

Sounds totally delicious!
As soon as I have worked out what Oleo is…I will give it a try!
