My Granny was famous for her scrumptious breads, biscuits and these sweet rolls. Her handwritten recipes were lost 16 years ago in a house fire and we’ve been trying to recreate this one over the past two holiday seasons. These are a treat by which we get to remember our sweet Granny. And they’re always eaten up quickly!
Soak yeast in warm water with 1 teaspoon of sugar.
Combine warm milk, 1/4 cup of sugar, and salt in a large bowl; stir to dissolve. Beat in shortening, eggs, yeast mixture, and 1 cup flour; beat until smooth. Gradually add remaining flour and beat until smooth.
On a lightly floured surface, knead dough until smooth and elastic, about 5-10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl and grease the top of the dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
Punch down the dough. Pinch and shape dough into small rolls with a rounded top. Arrange rolls, sides touching, in a greased baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees (F) for 20-25 minutes.
Yields 3 dozen rolls.

I’m obviously new to the site, sooo, I cannot wait to try this recipe, one question can I use a substitute for the shortening?

Do these rolls get a second rise? They sound very good. Thank you for sharing.
