Sweet, moist and delicious… This recipe has been handed down four generations from my Great Grandma Porter.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease two loaf pans.
Mix together the oil and sugar in a large bowl. Then mix in the eggs and vanilla. Stir in the sifted flour, salt, soda and cinnamon.
Once combined, fold in the apples (I prefer Braeburn apples because they are just a little bit tart) and nuts(optional). The dough will be a little stiff, but don’t worry. The apples add a lot of moisture to the bread and there are a lot of apples.
Divide the dough evenly into the two loaf pans. Cook in preheated oven for 45-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. The top of the bread should be a golden brown and firm to the touch when finished.
One of my favorite things about this bread is the crispy crackle top that it creates. This is always good right out of the oven but it seems to get better with age. The moisture of the apples seem to absorb into the bread. It also freezes well. Enjoy!
