This is my Grandma’s Easter Bread that she made for every holiday. It is wonderful, tastes like an egg bread, but there are no eggs in it. I think she would be very happy to know that I am sharing it with you all. I have typed out the directions EXACTLY as she gave them to me.
Soften the yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water (110-115 degrees) along with 1 teaspoon of sugar.
Warm only the milk.
Stir in the 1/2 sugar, butter and salt. When butter is melted, add the yeast. Add 2 cups of the flour and mix till flour is absorbed. Add the rest of the flour 1 cup at a time and beat the hell out of it.
Rise till double; punch down and divide into 6 balls. Roll out each ball into 12″ long ropes and braid 3 together to make 2 braids.
Place one braid on top of the other on a greased cookie sheet; let rise till double.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Bread should be a dark golden brown. When you knock on it, it should sound hollow.
Wash with egg wash (yolks only and 1 teaspoon water) as soon as it comes out of the oven.
