My mother made these for us when I was a child: velvety chicken stew underneath, little pillows of heaven above. You weren’t late to supper that night!
As your stew is gently bubbling and about 15 minutes from being done, sift dry ingredients together into a medium bowl. Combine egg, milk, and shortening. Pour all at once into the flour mixture. Mix only until dry ingredients are wet. Drop batter by spoonfuls onto stew. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes. Cover the pot and cook for another 10 minutes.
Note: you can also add a bit of dried chopped parsley to the dumplings for extra flavor.
