Description

We loved it when my mother made these wonderful donut/muffins when we were growing up.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • ½ cups Vegetable Shortening
  • 2 whole Large Eggs, Beaten
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 cups Cored And Finely Diced Apples
  • ½ cups Butter, Melted
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon

Preparation

Mix first 5 ingredients with a fork. Add shortening and mix until shortening is broken up. Set aside. In another bowl combine eggs, milk and diced apples. Add to dry ingredients just until blended.

Spoon into greased muffin pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until muffins are light to medium brown.

While donuts are baking, melt 1/2 cup butter. Set aside. Combine 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. When donuts are done and before they have had a chance to cool, dip in butter and then in sugar.

My kids loved this recipe. Especially hot out of the oven with spiced tea. I did not roll the entire muffin in the butter, I just dipped the tops (it seemed like alot of butter for kids) they couldnt tell the difference. I also shredded the apples. It was crazy good!

I made these today and they are delicious! I baked for 25 minutes and mine were not getting brown as posted in other posts. I took them out, they were just right…still moist. We don’t care for nutmeg, so I did 1/4 tsp. and 3/4 tsp. cinnamon and that was perfect. I didn’t dip the entire muffin in butter, just brushed the top and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. I’m making these again soon!

Yum! I made a muffin version of these and just dipped the tops of the muffin in cinnamon sugar. The muffin itself is pretty sweet, I don’t think it needs to be coated in the sugar. Next time I think I’ll add some applesauce as well for some extra apple flavor.

I made these last night. They were very good – did some brushing of the butter on top then dipped the tops into the cinnamon sugar – it was delicious. It took forever to get these brown. I baked them probably 35 minutes and even then the tops weren’t too brown…but by then I was dying to have one so I took them out. They were definitely done, and the cinn/sugar on the top makes them brownish anyway. FYI: I got 18 total instead of 24. But very very good – I will keep the recipe!

Easy and very good. Instead of sugar and cinnamon for the topping, I made a sugar glaze and drizzled it over the tops. Yummy!

Lovely recipe! Followed the reviews above and only dipped the tops. Perfect amount of savory buttery goodness :)

Very tasty! I baked in muffin papers and tipped only the tops, so I melted only 1/2 the about of butter and mixed up a 1/2 batch of the cinnamon sugar mix. They are a hit!

I made these for a first grade class treat. To help the teacher, I only dipped the tops in butter/sugar and left them in muffin wrappers. They were a HUGE hit for the kids and adults.
