Description

I’m not sure if this is actually the recipe that Auntie Anne’s uses, but regardless, it’s still just as good (or better!) as any soft pretzel you can buy at the mall!
These are a lot of fun to make with a bunch of people—friends, family, youth groups, etc. Even children can work at rolling out their own pretzels!

Make sure to have cinnamon sugar, nacho cheese, sour cream and onion powder, and mustard on hand for your party!

Ingredients

  • 2-½ cups Warm Water
  • 2 Tablespoons Yeast
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 7 cups Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Boiling Water
  • 1 package Pretzel Salt
  • ½ cups Melted Butter

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Dissolve yeast in warm water and let set until activated. Add brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Add flour one cup at a time until mixture isn’t moist. You may need a little less flour or a little more. Let rise for 30 minutes.

Let the fun begin! Form balls of dough the size of a small fist. Roll dough into a thin “rope” (emphasis on thin) and twist into pretzels. If you are doing this at a gathering, make sure you have plenty of counter space to work on, as the “ropes” can get quite long. Also, have flour available to sprinkle on the work surface in case the dough gets a little sticky.

While pretzels are being shaped, combine baking soda with water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and make sure baking soda is dissolved. Keep very warm.

After pretzels are shaped, carefully dip them in the baking soda solution. It’s easiest to assign one person to this job as the pretzels are being twisted.

Place dipped pretzels on a greased cookie sheet, sprinkle with pretzel salt (kosher, sea, and regular salt work just fine too) and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Brush with melted butter.

Enjoy with your favorite dips and toppings!

When I have a soft pretzel party, I almost always have to double, triple, or even, quadruple the batch to have enough to go around!

I made these today in preschool with my little kiddos…..not only were the simple, they were absolutely delicious!! We were learning about the alphabet so I had them shape them into the letter of their first name. The best pretzel recipe I’ve tried at home….thank so much!!

Delicious!
I cut the recipe in half. It was perfect for 3-4 people.

I made these last night, and they were delicious! They reminded me so much of Aunt Annie’s pretzels; I even wrapped up Nathan’s hotdogs in the dough. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I’m sorry! I changed it now! Have no idea why I forgot it in the first place, but anyways…

If you’re looking for a mall pretzel recipe, this is the one. I was surprised by how easy these actually were to make. The long instructions for pretzel recipes can make them a little intimidating, but this was super easy. My whole family got involved and it was a great activity for three kids under 8 years old. I did omit the vanilla extract as we were making garlic and parmesan coated ones. FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing.

Love this recipe! I’ve been using Martha Stewart’s Recipe and it’s just too fussy. This was simple and tasty…a nice dough to work with.
