Description

The perfect little combination of chocolate, coffee, and a little flair. Great for making with children and for the holidays.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Butter, Softened
  • 1-½ cup Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Coffee, Strong Brewed
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 4 cups Rolled Oats
  • Your Choice Of Decoration (See Suggestions Below)

Preparation

1. Cream butter, sugar, and cocoa until smooth. Add in coffee and vanilla, mix well. Add in oats and mix well on high speed with mixer until completely combined, about 3-5 minutes.

2. Pinch a 1 1/2 inch piece of dough and roll between your palms. Roll in desired decoration to coat.

3. Eat immediately or chill for approximately 2 hours for a firmer ball.

Decoration: the traditional decoration is coconut flakes, but you may use sanding sugar, colored sprinkles, toasted almond slivers, powdered sugar, powdered cocoa, etc.

We’ve made these in our family forever and they are fabulous! Brings back great memories, must go make some…..We have often rolled them in flaked coconut or slightly crushed pearl sugar.

The reviews for this recipe hasn’t been great; I haven’t tried it myself – but for a more authentic recipe, please check out and compare with mine. Rightly made, these are indeed delish.

I had high hopes….but they are ridiculously gritty. I added a small amount of cocoa, but the flavor was slightly bitter. I think this sounds like a good idea but this recipe needs revision.

I agree with arenee. I also added 1/2 C cocoa based on another site and I softened the butter based on that site. My daughter had fun rolling them, but the flavor wasn’t so great. I also can’t imagine making them as shown in the picture-way too sweet. I rolled some of them more cocoa and others in powdered sugar because I didn’t have any coconut.

As written, these were terrible. But for something called a “chocolate ball” I expected 1 oz of chocolate to 4 CUPS of oats was typo. When I realized it wasn’t working, I looked the recipe up on another site and it used 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder in addition to the ingredients listed here. Also, the recipe doesn’t say how the butter should be prepared so I melted it – the other recipe called for it to be only softened. Finally, the other recipe used powdered sugar which would have been great since mine were a tad gritty. Oh well, at least the cocoa saved them from being inedible! I’ll try again soon!
