These are wonderful Appelflappen, not to be confused with appelbeignets like some do. I make these regurly now, as they are really expensive pre-made. (Ask any Dutch spoken bakery for Appelflappen and this is what you will get) And are so delicious, great for just eating between meals or even as breakfast/lunch. You can make the dough yourself, but it is a lot of work. If one can find a cheap package of those puffy pastry things its way easier.

This is not a recipe for Dutch appelflappen. A true recipe is peeled, cored, sliced apples (1/2 inch thick) coated with brown sugar and cinnamon, dipped in a flour and beer batter then deep fried until golden. Allow oil to drain off then sprinkle with powdered sugar. My Dutch family has made these for many years.

Born raised and still living in the Netherlands for almost 40 years now, most of us consider these to be appelflappen. I know our southern compatriats might have a differebnt opinion. But as you can see by rj berg’s comment. Thats incorrect. These delicious things are correctly named in this case.

@Charli de Jong: According to the Dutch dictionary “Van Dale” an appelflap is the following:
“Pastries from dough, raisins and sour apples” [Dutch: “gebak uit deeg, rozijnen en zure appelen”]
For the appelbeignet the “van Dale” refers to the description of a “beignet” where the following is stated:
“Pastry of fruit slices with some batter made of flour” [Dutch: “gebak van vruchtenschijfjes met wat meelbeslag”]

I was also born in the Netherlands, I go back every year and each weekend, my family and I enjoy an appelflap with our coffee. This recipe is, in essence, correct. The apple rings mentioned in comments here are appel beignets, frequently served on New Year’s Eve.
That being said…. do the apples cook down enough with only 15 minutes baking time and no pre-cooking of the filling?

fhigson is correct…Dutch appelflappen (apple beignets) are apple rings dipped in batter then fried.

Fhigson is talking about appelbeignets, not appelflappen. Appelflappen are made like in this recipe.
