Description

This St. Patrick’s Day, I will be mak­ing this bread. I’ve looked at many recipes over the years and this one is what I always go back to. I got it from an Irish friend who liked to raise a glass of Jame­son. Kin­dred soul of ours here at casa de con­fu­sion. Given that I love this bread, I made it the other day to have with our soup. It is sim­ple, easy and beyond-belief good.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups All Pur­pose Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons White Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Bak­ing Soda
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • ½ cups Butter

Preparation

Sift all dry ingre­di­ents together. Cre­ate a lit­tle cir­cle in the cen­ter of them (in your bowl), add soft­ened butter and the buttermilk.

Mix together quickly. It won’t look like white bread with yeast. Instead, it will look more like bis­cuit dough. In fact, the fin­ished product, if you ask my hubby, is like a per­fect Irish bis­cuit bread, show­ing how our own Amer­i­can her­itage has been so deeply infused with all that is Irish, even though one has never thought of the rolling hills and lush land of Ireland.

Knead it for no more than a minute. It does not need to be worked to death.

Then shape into a round cake (you could even bake it in a cake pan if you like). Put it onto a floured sheet pan (or in a cake pan) and carve a cross into the top of it.

Bake in a pre­heated over at 425 degrees for 40 minutes.

This recipe was so easy to follow and turned out GREAT!! I made it for the first time on Friday and it still tasted yummy despite accidentally leaving out 1/4 cup of butter. It’s very forgiving! I made two more loaves yesterday with the extra butter as called for…and wow… its so moist and delicious! Perfect with homemade jam!!

I made this last night and my husband claimed it was awesomeness in biscuit/bread form. In hindsight, I should have buttered my hands so the dough didn’t stick as much when I was mixing/kneading.

This looks really close to one I loved and somehow lost. It also had dill in it tho so I might try this with the dill added. I’m not a fan of sweet breads like the typical Irish Soda Bread you seem to find this time of year but I adored the Dilly Soda Bread version.

This was fantastic! I added 1/4 cup of currants, next time I might add 1/3. After I mixed it with my hands I put the dough on a floured surface to knead it a few times. I gently patted the dough in a round cake pan (sprayed with the flour cooking spray). It turned out so well that I made a second loaf and took both to my office. After it thoroughly cooled, I used my electric knife to cut perfect wedges per. I served with a tub of Kerry Gold Irish Butter. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

Great and easy bread recipe for when there is no time for a yeast bread! I subbed in half white whole wheat flour and it worked out well. Almost biscuit like!

I made this bread for my family on St. Patrick’s Day to go along with our Corned Beef and Cabbage. The bread was the hit of the dinner. I have since made it again and changed it up a bit to serve it for a brunch. I doubled the sugar, added 1/4 cup dark raisins and 1 tsp. cinnamon to the dough. After baking, I drizzled a simple powdered sugar icing over the top while it was warm. Tasted very much like scones but much less work involved. It was a major hit also. Thanks for posting this recipe. It is a keeper.
