Description

Buttercream icing.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Sweet Butter At Room Temperature
  • 3 cups Sifted Confectioners Sugar, Divided
  • ⅔ cups Sweetened Condensed Milk (e.g. Eagle Brand)
  • ½ cups Sifted Confectioners Sugar
  • 2 whole Large Egg Whites
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Preparation

Place room-temperature butter in a mixing bowl. Add 2 cups confectioner’s sugar, mix at low speed to obtain a smooth paste. Whip at medium speed, adding sweetened condensed milk slowly and gradually until light and fluffy.

Using a very clean bowl and beater, whip egg whites to stiff peaks while gradually adding 1/2 cup of confectioner’s sugar.

Mix this meringue slowly into the butter mixture. Add vanilla, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. More sugar may be required to reach desired consistency.

Best results are obtained if butter and sugar are at room temperature and egg whites and milk are cold.

Sanders was a family-owned bakery/candy shop/soda fountain business in Detroit. It was founded in 1875 and, 100 years later, had 60 company-owned stores in Michigan and Ohio. Sadly, they are now out of business, but some of their products are still being produced by Morley’s candy. This icing is in the “candy-kitchen” style that Sanders created, and similar to what was used on their “bumpy cakes” and other fine baked goods.

I know they have some stores – there is one in downtown Birmingham, and one in the Pointes, I think, but they aren’t owned by the Sanders family like they were for more than 100 years. Stroh’s ice cream also is making and selling some of the Sander’s ice creams too. Anyway, I didn’t want to get into all of that for folks who never heard of them!

We used to have a store near my office in Madison Heights in the 1970’s, and we would go there for lunch – usually a tuna sandwich, and a hot fudge cream puff for dessert!

I drive by the Birmingham store frequently, and have been meaning to stop.

Of course, the hot fudge topping is my favorite, and my mother loved their butterscotch topping.

Actually Sanders is still in business. They have been making a great come back in Michigan since 2002 when Morley Candy purchased them. http://www.sanderscandy.com A new Sanders store in Novi, MI just opened and I know there are at least 7 others.
Check out our their story on You Tube…search Sanders Candy! CNN Money just did a segment on their come back.
