Better than anything from a jar, and easy enough to make on a busy weeknight, this simple marinara sauce recipe is for you!
In a large saucepan, heat olive olive oil, garlic, and optional crushed red pepper flakes until garlic is fragrant, about 30–60 seconds. Add crushed tomatoes, salt, and pepper; stir well. Bring sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes (or up to 30 minutes if you have time). If using optional basil, add it whole during the last 5 minutes of cooking, then discard.
Remove from heat and stir in butter.
