I make these every year for teachers at Christmas. They are easy and so, so good!
In a large mixer bowl, beat the butter or margarine and brown sugar with an electric mixer till combined. Add the egg yolk; beat well. Stir in flour and salt, mixing well.
With floured hands, press the dough into the bottom of a greased 13×9 baking pan. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes or till light brown. Remove pan from the oven; transfer to a wire rack while preparing the filling.
To make the filling, in a medium heavy saucepan, heat the condensed milk and butter over medium heat till bubbly, stirring constantly. Cook and stir for 5 minutes more. Mixture will thicken and become smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
Spread filling over the baked layer. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or till top is golden. Sprinkle the baked layers evenly with chocolate pieces; bake for 1 to 2 minutes more or till chocolate pieces are shiny and melted.
Remove from oven; transfer to a wire rack. Using a flexible spatula, immediately spread the chocolate evenly over the baked layer. Sprinkle bars with brickle pieces or pecans. Cool completely.
Cover and chill till chocolate is set. For triangles, cut into rectangles (about 3×2 inches each), then cut diagonally. These may be frozen for up to 3 months. Makes about 36 bars.
