This is a great light and fluffy buttercream. The secret is letting it mix for several minutes. I took a cake decorating class a few years ago and this was the icing recipe the teacher recommended.
Cream butter, salt and Crisco in the bowl of a stand mixer until mixed well (about 2 minutes). Add milk and flavorings. Beat well.
Turn the mixer onto low speed and slowly add the sugar. Once the sugar is combined, turn the mixer to medium and continue beating for 5-7 minutes. You’ll need to scrape the sides of the bowl a couple times as you continue beating.
