Description

A recipe passed down through generations and simply the best bread I’ve ever had.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Old Fashioned Oats
  • 2 cups Boiling Water
  • 3 Tablespoons Butter
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 2 packages (1/4 Oz. Size) Active Yeast
  • 1-½ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ cups Warm Water
  • 5 cups Flour

Preparation

In a large bowl, combine the oats, boiling water, butter and brown sugar; mix well and let cool until lukewarm.

In a separate bowl, combine the granulated sugar, yeast, salt and warm water. Let sit for about 5 minutes. Add yeast mixture to oatmeal mixture and then stir in flour. Mix in mixer (with dough hook) for 6 minutes, or knead until dough no longer sticks to your fingers (adding flour if necessary). Let rise for 1 hour.

Shape into two loaves and put each of the loaves into a standard size loaf pan. Let them rise for another hour. Bake at 350ºF for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

I would love to try this, and am wondering how many loaves it makes?

Delicious bread!! Excellent on it’s own or toasted with Nutella or as sandwich bread. Will definitely make this again and again – thanks for sharing!

This bread is very very tasty, unfortunately mine didn’t seem to rise, so it’s incredibly dense, making it more of a dessert bread for my house.

This oatmeal bread recipe is one I will want to make over and over. It’s truly delicious, sweet and moist. I served this up toasted with tuna, today! Yum! Thank you, Country Cook

This bread was FANTASTIC, sweet, dense and moist. I haven’t been able to stop eating it! I added almost a cup more flour for a total of 6 cups. Thank you! This one is a keeper!
