This crust incorporates both butter and shortening for a crust with a buttery flavor and crispy crust. Use for pies, tarts, quiche or a topping for chicken pot pie.
In a food processor, add flour, salt, sugar and butter flakes; mix well. Add cold butter and shortening to flour mixture and pulse processor a few times until flour resembles sand. Add ice water until flour resembles wet sand. Transfer flour to a board and knead until mixture can be pressed into a ball. Divide dough in half. Roll each half between two sheets of plastic wrap. Bake according to pie directions.

butter flakes are dehydrated butter substitute. the brands i use are butter buds or molly mc butter. i use this along with butter to give a boost of butter flavor in my recipes. i also use it in my rice pilaf, to cut down on the amount of butter used. i belive sam’s club carries molly mc butter. both brands are common and should be readily available in the spice section of your local supermarket.

This sounds like a great recipe, except, what are butter flakes and where do you buy them.
