This is an old-fashioned cooked frosting. Sticky and sweet, kids love it, and if you are looking for something other than butter cream, cream cheese, fondant, or canned, this is a fun alternative.
This recipe is easier with a helper.
Combine the sugar, Karo, water, and salt in a double boiler over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Cook until about 240ºF. Just before the syrup is ready, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. With a handheld electric mixer, continue to beat the egg whites as you slowly pour the hot syrup mixture into them. After all of the syrup is in, add the vanilla extract and beat for another minute or two until the frosting can form peaks.
