These green beans are slow cooked in bacon and onions to create the best bacon/onion sauce that coats the beans.
Place bacon in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium high heat until the fat begins to render. Stir in onions and garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the beans, water, butter, salt and pepper. Let the beans cook over medium to medium high heat, stirring every 10 minutes or so until most of the water has evaporated, leaving about a 1/4 inch of liquid in the bottom of the pan, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
