These are so quick, easy and good that you’ll never go back to using canned refried beans.
Heat bacon grease or canola oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add beans (drained or undrained; it depends on how thick you like your beans), and mash with a potato masher until it reaches the consistency you like. This is the great thing about this—you can make it exactly how you like it.
Reduce heat and cook for about 10-15 minutes, tasting and adding salt and black pepper to taste. I also like to stir in some taco/Mexican cheese, but it’s not necessary.
