Delicious skilleted red cabbage with a sweet and sour taste. Goes wonderfully with Czech Szriskes and dumplings.
Brown onion in shortening until golden brown. Do not fully brown.
Add water, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper to the onions and bring the liquid to a boil.
Place cabbage in the liquid. Slightly crack and grind caraway seeds in your hands as you sprinkle them over the cabbage. This will help them release the maximum amount of flavor.
Boil for approximately 30 minutes until the cabbage has become wilted and soft. Stir occassionaly to evenly cook.
Sprinkle with flour to thicken the remaining liquid slightly and boil for a few more seconds until desired “doneness” is achieved. They should be wilted and soft, but not mushy.
Serve along side your Szriskes and dumplings.
Nasdravie!

I hope you find it to be just a great as your grandma’s! This is one of my favorites from my grandma’s kitchen, she’s even canned it for me and my uncle when we’ve had to go without her cooking for extended periods of time.

This looks very similar to the recipe my Czech grandmother used to make. The carraway seeds is what makes it so perfect! Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I was going to make that suggesstion in the recipe but got side-tracked.
I think that would be a perfectly good alternative.
I hope you like, please let me know what you think!!

Could you use butter instead of shortening? I don’t always care for the flavor of shortening.
