This is my grandma’s recipie, which we’ve had with holiday dinners for years. It takes a little longer to make than the traditional green bean casserole with cream of mushroom soup, but it is very much worth it.
Saute mushrooms and onion in butter until onions are clear. Add flour and cook until smooth. Add milk, evaporated milk, Cheez Whiz, Tabasco, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Cook until thickened (not long). Drain beans and mix with the cheese sauce. Add water chestnuts, and put in a large buttered casserole dish. Top with almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
