I have made these green beans for a decade and they are always a hit. I think the secret is plunging them into ice water before cooking.
Wash beans; trim, and remove strings. Add water to depth of 1 inch in a large Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Add beans. Cover. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 to 12 minutes until beans are crisp-tender and bright green. Drain beans. Submerge beans into ice water; drain and set aside.
Melt butter in Dutch oven; add chopped onions and garlic. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until onions are crisp-tender. Add beans and remaining ingredients and cook until beans are thoroughly heated. Cook to desired tenderness.
