Baked beans just remind me of BBQ. These have a wonderful barbaque flavor with a hint of sweetness and good old bacon. As a meal or as a side dish, they are terrific either way.
In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, brown the ground beef then remove it from the Dutch oven into a bowl. Cut the bacon into 1/2″ pieces and cook it in the Dutch oven for a couple of minutes. Then add the onions and cook until they are tender and the bacon is crispy.
Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
Add the cooked hamburger meat back into the Dutch oven. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix to combine. Bring beans to a boil then cover the Dutch oven.
Put the Dutch oven in the preheated oven and bake for 3 hours. Stir about every hour. They are done when they are a dark brown and have thickened.
** I doubled the recipe for this and used triple the ketchup, brown sugar and vinegar to make it the perfect bean/meat to sauce ratio.
Enjoy!
These are great as a full meal or as a side dish. A single recipe serves 6 – 8 as a side dish.
