Description

I wanted to try to recreate my family’s old-time apple butter stir-off recipe with a backseat loaded with apples that I got last week. I was saving some for pies, but, oh! This turned out good! I love when that happens! :) This stuff will make your kitchen smell like heaven. Trust me.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds Jonathan Apples, Or Other Tart Variety
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Splenda
  • 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cloves
  • 10 drops To 12 Drops Red Food Coloring
  • ¼ teaspoons Cinnamon Oil
  • ¾ cups Cinnamon Red Hots Candies

Preparation

Quarter, core, and chop apples into chunks, leaving peels on. Fill a large oval slow cooker with chopped apples and add the remaining ingredients. Set on low and cook for 8 to 10 hours, removing the lid for the last 3 or 4 hours to allow butter to thicken and reduce. Only occasional stirring is needed. The peels are so well softened by the time it is finished that you don’t notice them, but, if desired, you can run the apple butter through a food processor to remove their texture. I personally love it exactly as it comes from the cooker!

Place finished apple butter in pint-sized containers and freeze.

Make sure to leave out a nice dish full of apple butter for breakfast! Yum …

Well, well, well…….wait till I tell my Grannie that someone figured out her apple butter recipe!! We never had store bought apple butter until we were adults and it wasn’t pretty, my Grannie has 20 grandchildren who would all rather eat chalk than store bought apple butter. I have looked for a recipe similar to hers (she says there is no recipe, she just knows how to make it) but have never had any luck. It cracks me up that her “secret ingredient” is the red hot candies. We discovered her secret ingredient a couple years ago when she couldn’t find Red Hots in the town that she lives in – she had the whole family on a hunting expedition. She doesn’t use the splenda, oil or food coloring, but the rest is it. And it is the best EVER!! Can’t wait to make this, and take a jar to Grannie!!
THANK YOU!!!
