Quick, inexpensive gift for little people.
Mix everything in a 3-quart non-stick pan. Cook over medium heat until the mixture is stiff.
Then, place mixture on a smooth surface to cool and knead it for a minute when it’s cool enough to handle.
Store mixture in a pint size container.
This makes a great gift that keeps little hands busy.

Glad you all enjoyed it. I believe alum has preservative qualities (helps keep pickles crisp) and it also has antibacterial properties. You would probably want to keep the alum in the recipe for this reason–to inhibit bacteria. The salt also acts as an anti-bacterial.

Alum (Ammonium Aluminum Sulfate) is a crystalline powder. It is a general purpose food additive that functions as a firming agent.
It can be found with the spices.
I found the answer with a Google search!

I don’t know what Alum is either, but i’ve seen this same recipe that uses a package of unsweetened Kool-Aid as the colour, and omits Alum.

I used to have a similar recipe and had lost it long ago, so thanks for this! I’m glad to have this back in my “recipe book”. I used to add essential oils, for a fun smell. Thanks again!
