Description

Easy to make homemade vanilla extract. I’ve broke the recipe down to making a 1/2 pint.

Ingredients

  • ½ pints Canning Jar
  • 4 whole Vanilla Beans
  • ½ pints Best Vodka

Preparation

To make homemade vanilla extract you simply put a couple of split vanilla beans in a glass jar, pour vodka over it and cover tightly. Let cure for 6 weeks or longer. Once or twice a week shake your jar/jars of homemade extract. Store in a dark cool spot.

If your vanilla beans are longer than your jar is tall, cut the beans in half and then split them. For a half-pint mason jar, use 3 to 4 vanilla beans. The more beans you add, the stronger your vanilla will be.

Once your extract has cured, you can leave your beans in the jar as you use it. When your jar starts getting low, simply add more vodka.

I’ve been making my own for years now. Love the subtle flavour it has compared to store-bought artificial stuff!

I want to try this, and am wondering if someone would recommend a brand of vodka that would be best?

Sister & I make this every year for Christmas gifts and people really look forward to receiving this very simple gift. We also make kahlua ;)

This is so good. I’m a bit lazy so I just stuff the bean pods into a bottle of Vodka or Rum.
