Nothing tastes better and saves money like making your own bottle of vanilla extract.
*Please note this makes more than 36 servings, but 36 is the largest number provided on the servings drop down menu. Really, it probably makes about 200 servings depending on the quantity needed for your recipe.
Take your split lengthwise vanilla beans and use a knife to scrape out the delicious aromatic black vanilla seeds. Place those seeds and the vanilla bean hull into your full vodka bottle. Put the lid on the bottle, give it a shake and place in a dark area for about 2 months (shaking ever so often). What you have at the end of 2 months is homemade vanilla extract for all of your baking needs (no more spending $4 on a small bottle of extract).
* Note: To make sure that none of the “woody” parts of your bean gets into your dessert recipes, filter the extract through a cheesecloth into a bowl. Then you can funnel it back into the vodka bottle for storage.

I have not made vanilla EXACTLY this way (full bottle of vodka), mostly because I didn’t realize I could, but I have been making my own vanilla in a smaller decorative bottle that my mother-in-law gave me (amounts to about 1/3 bottle of Vodka), and use 2-3 beans.
IT IS AMAZING. It is hard when I run out and have to get store-bought. It just doesn’t compare. And it is super easy! Hardest part is the time it takes!
