What happens, and when

Saving your recipes

There are only a few days left. The site goes offline at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on August 31, and recipes will not be available after that — once it is down, pages can no longer be printed, saved, or imported into any app. Please save anything you want to keep before then.

There are a few ways to do this. If you have more than a handful of recipes to save, start with PDFs — it is the quickest way to get everything safely onto your computer before the deadline, and you can print them on paper later at your leisure.

Before you start, it helps to gather your list of recipes: your own submissions are on your member profile page, and anything you saved is under your favorites.

Saving a recipe as a PDF

This is the quickest way to save a lot of recipes, and the most durable: a PDF keeps its formatting anywhere and does not depend on this site — or any app — staying online. You use your browser’s print screen, but save a file to your computer instead of sending it to a printer.

  1. Open the recipe page and press ⌘ P (Mac) or Ctrl P (Windows).
  2. On Windows, or in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on any platform: set the Destination or Printer dropdown to Save as PDF (sometimes listed as Microsoft Print to PDF), then click Save.
  3. On a Mac, in Safari: click the PDF dropdown at the bottom-left of the print dialog and choose Save as PDF.
  4. Give the file the recipe’s name and pick a folder to keep them all together.

A folder of PDFs is a good safety net even if you also import into an app — it is a plain copy that will still open years from now.

Printing a recipe on paper

Every recipe page has a print stylesheet that strips out the navigation, sidebars, and ads, so you get a clean copy of just the recipe.

  1. Open the recipe page you want to keep.
  2. Press ⌘ P on a Mac, or Ctrl P on Windows. (You can also use File → Print.)
  3. Check the preview — you should see the recipe title, ingredients, and instructions without the site’s navigation.
  4. Click Print.

Repeat for each recipe you want. With a large collection this is the slowest option, so if you have a lot to get through before the 31st, save them as PDFs first — you can print those from your computer any time after the site is gone.

Importing into Mela

Mela is a recipe app for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. It can pull a recipe in from a web address, so it will save the ingredients and instructions as an editable recipe rather than a flat page.

  1. Copy the recipe’s web address from your browser’s address bar.
  2. In Mela, start a new recipe and choose the option to add one from a link, then paste the address. Mela will fetch the page and fill in the recipe for you.
  3. You can also use Mela’s built-in browser to open the recipe page and save it directly from there.
  4. Check the imported recipe against the original — give the ingredients and steps a quick read to make sure nothing was missed.

Important to note: importing works by fetching the live page, so it only works while the site is still online. After 7:00 p.m. Eastern on August 31, Mela will no longer be able to pull recipes from Tasty Kitchen — but anything you have already imported stays in your collection.

Importing into Paprika

Paprika Recipe Manager is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, and Android, and syncs your collection across them. Like Mela, it can import a recipe from a web address.

  1. Copy the recipe’s web address from your browser’s address bar.
  2. In Paprika, add a new recipe and choose the option to download or import from a web address, then paste it in.
  3. Paprika also has a built-in browser: open the recipe page inside the app and use its save button to add it to your collection.
  4. Give the imported recipe a quick check against the original before moving on.

Important to note: importing works by fetching the live page, so it only works while the site is still online. After 7:00 p.m. Eastern on August 31, Paprika will no longer be able to pull recipes from Tasty Kitchen — but anything you have already imported stays in your collection.
