We never had store bought apple butter until we were adults and it wasn’t pretty, my Grannie has 20 grandchildren who would all rather eat chalk than store bought apple butter. I have looked for a recipe similar to hers (she says there is no recipe, she just knows how to make it) but have never had any luck. It cracks me up that her “secret ingredient” is the red hot candies. We discovered her secret ingredient a couple years ago when she couldn’t find Red Hots in the town that she lives in – she had the whole family on a hunting expedition. She doesn’t use the splenda, oil or food coloring, but the rest is it. And it is the best EVER!! Can’t wait to make this, and take a jar to Grannie!!
