I have never made apple butter before. It seemed like it would be way to hard. This recipe could not be easier. I love that you don't have to peel the apples. The crock pot made it so easy and it turned out perfectly. I mixed the 3 cups of sugar and spices into the apple/cider mixture from the beginning and once the apples softened up after about 3 hours, used an immersion blender to make it all smooth. Then cooked about 6 more hours. I did have to uncover and cook on high for about an hour or so at the end. Maybe mine isn't as smooth as it would have been in the blender but I don't mind a few little chunks. I will definitely make this again!

Oh gosh is this stuff good! This is such a versatile recipe! I have let this keep on cooking past the 6-8 hours in the crock pot and it turns out great each time. The only things I have done differently is that I use sweet apples and cut the sugar amount in half, I add more cinnamon, and since I don't always like nutmeg I left it out all together. This stuff is good on just about anything, and it's the only thing that keeps me eating my whole grain english muffins that I don't like, but have to eat. I also can't describe how wonderful my house smells the morning after this has been cooking all night long! There no candle in the world that compares!

My husband loves apple butter so I made it using this recipe a couple of days ago. It is wonderful!
I used granny smith apples.
Like Juanita, I had never canned apple butter before. It was so easy to do! Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe and great directions.

I thought I would add on the sterilization method, I put my jars through the dishwasher and keep the heat dry on the whole time. THEN I just take one jar out at a time as needed and fill them. It's an easy method as well.

LOVE the apple butter recipe. Thank You!

Ooh, also feel free to adjust your spices as you prefer. If you hate nutmeg ...leave it out! This is a very fragrant recipe as written. And the flavors will intensify after it cooks for a long time. But the great part about apple butter is it is very forgiving and is pretty difficult to mess up!
