I substituted butter for margarine (it’s all I had on hand), and the dough came out so buttery and tender.

I was nervous because the two previous reviewers had a bad experience, but let me assure you that this recipe is a winner. The dough was a little sticky/loose, and I struggled a bit spreading it on my parchment paper, but I used my hands and got the top fairly even. Despite the somewhat lumpy dough, my cookies still turned out just right.

The buttery cookie is almost like a shortbread and is perfectly complemented by the melty chocolate chips. (I’ve even been known to sprinkle some toasted pecans on top!) So easy yet different from your run-of-the mill chocolate chip cookie. I took a batch to work the other day, and they were devoured within a few hours!

I made a batch up as a thank you gift for some friends, and they are lucky that most of the squares made it to them!!! Melting the chocolate chips for frosting is genius. It is a fun change from doing “regular” chocolate chip cookies but with the same flavor!
