I made this yesterday and it was waaaay too sugary! Did I do something wrong or are my taste buds jacked up because all I tasted was sugar. I'd like to try again but how do I modify this so the sugar isn't so overpowering? Can I just use 1 1/2 cups instead of 2 or is that going to throw everything off?

Made this Saturday evening for my husband who IS a banana pudding snob and it passed the taste test - for both of us! Super easy and delicious. Even better on Sunday (at least that's what he told me as he finished off the bowl before I had a chance to even stick a spoon in it!) Good job Rfreebie!

We just went to a cookout and my husband was all excited because one of the wive's said she was bringing homemade bread pudding. By homemade she meant she assembled it it herself - with pkg. pudding and cool whip. My husband was SO disappointed!

So true...even the boxed pudding that you cook isn't the same as homemade. My mom always made hers this way and it is so much better...doesn't break down into a watery mess.

.....but if you want to be REALLYYYYYYY snobby, please use real vanilla--not the extract!! This is the way my mom always made banana pudding. You have to be careful though about your bananas being too green, or they will become hard in the warm pudding. I guess I'm not a snob, cause if I need a fast, quick dessert banana pudding is the way to go with the boxed mixes. Either way-you can't beat banana pudding. Especially in the summer time.

I'm in total agreement. Instant pudding doesn't do it for me. I need the good stuff. The hard stuff. That's right.... homemade vanilla custard. And Vanilla Wafers. No substitutions allowed. If that makes me a banana pudding snob too, then so be it. I'm down with that! And I'll be trying your version this summer. Especially since we grow banana trees in our back yard.
