SO GOOD! After making this today, I am seriously offended that this pie is not more popular in the States. It is a tragic miscarriage of justice/taste. And it's so incredibly easy to put together (after boiling/cooling the can, anyway, but that only requires time--virtually no effort)!

Will be making this again and again!

Hi Starving! I usually just put the cans in the water then bring it up to a boil. Keep the water boiling the entire time. This is why I do a few cans at one time because it does use up a bit of energy to keep the water boiling. I have been told that the premade cans of dulce de leche work well with this recipe if you didn't want to boil the cans for that long a period of time. Also, I've heard of some people using their crock pots. Put the cans in the crock pot at night and cover with water. In the morning, take cans out and they should have the same results. I haven't actually tried that yet but it seems like it should work. Let me know how it turns out for you!

I researched the concept of boiling the cans and saw lots of different answers. After the water comes to a boil, do you then add the can? Or do you put it in the water before the water boils? After the can is in the water, do you leave it at a high boil or do you turn the heat down? Thanks! So excited to try this yummy looking pie! :)

Jeri - thanks so much for the great comments and the comparison between the boiled sweetened condensed milk & pre-made, canned dulce de leche. I was curious how it would turn out. Glad you're enjoying this so much!

Okay - we've had this dessert twice in the last 4 days! After reading some of the other comments, I decided to try it with the Dulce de Leche (I had a can in the pantry). Must say it turned out nicely as well. But the original recipe has just a little "something extra", so when time permits, I'll boil my own Eagle Brand. Thanks again, you're a rock star!

This has become my new favorite pie! What a delight - everyone loved it. I like your idea of boiling several cans of sweetened condensed milk at once and keeping the extras on hand in the pantry. Sometimes I'm not organized enough to remember to start the boiling process far enough in advance. Last night we were enjoying this treat at 9:30! Thank you so much for a wonderful recipe!

CountryCook ---

I "discovered" this dessert when living in Bangkok and my British friends forced me to try it .... I never looked back and have been on the hunt for a good recipe for it ever since we returned to the US. They ALL -- to a woman -- recommended this method you suggest, of boiling the sweetened condensed milk cans.

Have some time on my hands this weekend with the holiday approaching and this one is on my list! Thank you for supplying the inspiration!

You can call it dulce de leche or you can call it toffee. I'm just gonna call it delicious. I had everything on hand to make this so I just went for it. I had absolutely no problems with boiling the cans and the toffee filling turned out beautifully. I've never had Banoffee Pie before but we are hooked now. Everyone loved it, including the kiddos!

Wow - who knew my little ole recipe would cause such a stir :) I'm sure there are many ways to do this recipe...this is just my way and this is how I was taught to make Banoffee Pie when I lived in England 10 years ago. I just hope people will give it a try and hopefully enjoy it. Thank you for all the insight!
