I made it with some applesauce I had preserved earlier in the season. The moistness provided by the applesauce and the decadence of the ramped-up spices really does make it feel like you’re eating a slice of fall! The caramel sauce was really good with the cake, but was also excellent on just sliced apples. The spices in this cake are very pronounced (which I love) but if you’re not a fan of overt spice flavors you might want to cut back a little bit.
