Description

These are a traditional Slovak treat that has been on my family’s Christmas Eve dinner table since before I was born. But after you try them, you’ll want to eat them all year!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole Milk
  • ½ cups Unsalted Butter
  • 7-½ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 envelopes Active Dry Yeast, 0.25 Ounce Packets
  • 2 whole Large Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons Hot Water
  • Honey For Drizzling
  • Poppy Seeds, For Sprinkling

Preparation

Heat milk and butter over low heat in a saucepan. Heat it just enough to melt butter then remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl combine dry ingredients (flour through yeast). Add milk and butter to the dry ingredients. Then add eggs. Mix well and knead till dough is no longer sticky. Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for 10 minutes. Punch it down and let it rise till doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 400 F. Pull off dough into walnut-sized pieces. Roll into balls and place the balls on sheet pans lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 400 F for 12-15 minutes. Remove pans from the oven and put baked balls into a colander. Pour a small amount of hot water over the balls then put them in a large bowl. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with poppy seeds as desired. Toss and serve.

We always have this Christmas Eve along with the Slovak mushroom soup. My mom (GOD REST HER SOUL, WE MISS HER) use to also make the bobalki with honey and crushed nuts also very tasty. Merry Christmas to all..
