Description

I came up with this recipe as a way to lighten up the original dish. Nobody in my family even realized they were eating turkey!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE MEATBALLS:
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • ½ cups Minced Fresh Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 20 ounces, weight Lean Ground Turkey
  • 1 whole Egg
  • ½ cups Dry Bread Crumbs
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ Tablespoons Dried Parsley
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Allspice
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • FOR THE SAUCE:
  • 14-½ ounces, fluid Low Sodium Beef Broth
  • 3 Tablespoons All-purpose Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ Tablespoons Dried Parsley
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoons Salt, Or To Taste
  • ¼ cups Light Sour Cream

Preparation

For the meatballs:

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, saute 2-3 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine turkey, onions and garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, allspice, and nutmeg. Shape meat mixture into 1″ balls and place in a baking dish. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until cooked through.

For the sauce:

Pour beef broth and flour into a jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake vigorously until flour is dissolved.

Pour beef broth mixture into a large skillet with a lid and add Worcestershire and parsley, black pepper, and salt to taste. Heat to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until thickened, 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in sour cream.

Add meatballs and cover. Simmer 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over egg noodles, if desired.

This looks and sounds delish! Definitely going on my menu as soon as Passover is over.

Loved the flavor of the meatballs but didn’t care much for the sauce. I definitely would use the meatball recipe again but with adjustments to the sauce.

Very good recipe! Everybody loved it! I had to put a bit more bread crumbs because my turkey meat was extra moist but besides that it was perfect.

Excellent recipe and the family (small children included) loved it. Meatballs were fork tender and the sauce was excellent. I ran it through weight watchers and found that one (of six total) servings is 6 points (so, I think you could consider this low fat if you use low fat sour cream).

I doubled the sauce portion of the recipe and I’m glad I did as I had plenty of sauce to put over noodles. There were leftovers, so having extra sauce came in handy.

I somehow ran out of worchestershire sauce and used equal amount soy sauce and red wine vinegar — worch. sauce would have tasted better, but the soy/red wine combo worked in a pinch.

We loved these! The only reason I’m giving it 4 start is because my husband felt like the sauce was missing something, but having said that him and my boys were all fighting over the last meatballs. I just made them last night and they are already asking for them again. And huge bonus- my husband couldn’t tell that they weren’t beef!

These were very good and easy to make. Using the beef broth in the gravy gives plenty of beef flavor. For me, the gravy is the best part of the recipe. The meatballs had a good flavor but were very dry which is why I’m giving the recipe 4 mitts instead of 5. If you are hardcore dieting I suppose moisture is something you sacrifice with extra lean meats but I’m just trying to be generally health conscious. I will definitely make these again but I will probably either soak the bread crumbs in a little milk or add some olive oil to the turkey when mixing everything together to get some of the moisture back.
