Description

Homemade Corn Dogs! It’s all about Summer…

Ingredients

  • Oil, For Frying
  • ⅔ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ cups Yellow Cornmeal
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • ¼ teaspoons Cayenne
  • 1 whole Egg
  • ¾ cups Whole Milk
  • 4 Tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 4 whole Hot Dogs Or Veggie Dogs
  • 4 whole Skewers (cut To 6" Length)

Preparation

Grab a pair of tongs and line a baking sheet with paper towels (for the corn dogs after frying).

Pour your oil in a cast iron skillet, Dutch oven, or deep fryer. Heat over medium-high heat until your thermometer reads 375F. (Note: My thermometer broke—long story—so I eyeballed this. Obviously, this isn’t the way to go, but I just tested the oil by putting a drop of the batter in. When it rose to the top, I knew it was ready.)

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, yellow corn meal, baking powder, salt, baking soda and cayenne. In a large bowl whisk the one egg and whole milk. Then add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients all at once, mixing until just combined. The mixture will look a lot like pancake mix. Don’t over-mix and let it rest for 10 minutes. (I found it easiest to transfer the mixture to a skinnier cup. It made it much easier to dip in the batter.)

While your batter is resting, lay your cornstarch on a baking sheet or big plate. Place each hot dog on a skewer and roll in the cornstarch, being sure to pat off any excess. Then quickly dip the hot dog in and out of the batter. Immediately place the corn dog in the hot oil. Be careful! The oil will be hot and may splash back at you. Cook until the coating is golden brown, 4-5 minutes. Remove with tongs and place on paper towels for draining. Serve with ketchup and mustard.

Very yummy and easy! Cut back on cayenne if you have picky eaters. My daughter complained- my son loved them- go figure! :-)

Made them today, will add honey or more spices next time. My family likes things little spicer or sweeter.

Living in the UK, I’ve never experienced a corn dog but I’m desperate to try one! Will definitely be making these very soon. These would be great to make for my brothers upcoming brithday party. Thanks for sharing!

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a corn dog as bad as I do right now! MMMMM

Wonderful recipe! I found that hand-dusting the hotdogs with the corn starch, and then stirring them around in the batter worked the best to get it to stick. I used whole wheat flour and had enough to do 7 hotdogs, it probably made the batter a little thicker. My kids loved this, I might cut back on the cayenne and add honey next time. I like the spiciness, but my kiddos thought it was a little too hot (I used some homemade cayenne, tho, so it made have been more potent!) Thanks for the recipe, love that I can control the quality of the ingredients!

It was a lot of fun to make corn dogs at home, but I was really hoping the batter would be more dense and bread-like. Mine turned out light and fluffy- they were beautiful and they tasted good, but the texture was off.

Made these on the spur of the moment for dinner tonight. I used flour to coat the weenies (because I didn’t have any cornstarch) and they worked perfectly! I made 1/2 sized dogs because I wasn’t sure how they would fit in my skillet. They cooked beautifully and tasted fantastic!

These are really good, but boy were they a pain to make! The batter wouldn’t stick to the hot dogs, so I had to pour it over each one. I’ll try using flour next time instead of corn starch.
