Description

All the goodness of a big, meaty cheeseburger…but in salad form. Try it today. Trust me.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground Beef
  • ⅓ cups Ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Yellow Mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon Or Spicy Mustard
  • 2 Tablespoons Barbecue Sauce
  • 4 whole Hamburger Buns
  • 1 stick Butter
  • 2 heads Romaine Or Green-Leaf Lettuce, Torn
  • 1 cup Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • 4 whole Roma Tomatoes, Diced
  • 8 whole Dill Pickle Spears, Cubed
  • 1 whole Red Onion, Sliced

Preparation

(Adapted from The Pampered Chef.)

Brown meat in a large skillet over medium heat. Then remove it from the heat and drain off the fat. Add ketchup, mustards and barbecue sauce to the meat and stir to combine. Taste and add more of whatever you think it needs. Keep warm.

Cut hamburger buns into 1-inch cubes. Melt 1/4 stick of butter in a separate skillet over low heat, then add the bread cubes and toss to coat. Toast the croutons in the skillet over low heat for about 10 -12 minutes, adding 1/4 stick of butter every couple of minutes until you’ve used the whole stick. (This will ensure all the croutons soak up the butter and toast nicely.)

To assemble each salad, pile torn lettuce on a plate. Pile on a good quantity of the meat mixture, then top with plenty of grated cheddar. Add diced tomato, chunks of pickles and slices of red onion over the top. Then sprinkle warm croutons all around the plate.

Serve immediately. Yum yum yum!

Thanks for sharing this! As I’m currently pregnant, for some reason breads make me kind of sick so I’ve been trying to create some yummy salads and this one sounds just delicious!

The meat was yummy and the croutons were almost sweet even though there was nothing but the wheat buns (in my case) and the butter. The lower rating is because we didn’t find it as satisfying as a regular cheeseburger would be. I AM going to try the spice/sauce ingredients the next time I make regular cheeseburgers!

This was a yummy salad! I added about 1/2 cup of diced onion to the meat while frying because I love fried onions on my burger and I used some smokey habanero barbecue sauce which spiced it up nicely. This recipe is a keeper for sure.

I have to admit I was skeptical of this recipe when I read it, but in the end, I tried it and liked it. The meat mixture is surprisingly tasty and addictive. And I loved the toasted bun croutons. (It took every bit of willpower I could muster not to eat 2/3 of them before dinner was served). My husband, who helped prepare this, groused a bit saying “I can’t for the life of me figure why you’d go to all the trouble of making this when you could just eat a cheeseburger.” But even he ate two plate fulls and left the table happy. Finally, it was my teenage daughter who pulled it all together for us by noting “It’s like eating a cheeseburger but you can make it a lot more healthy by going light on the meat and cheese and loading up on the salad and veggies.” From the mouth of babes! Finally, I would note it’s not as much prep work as you might think. I made the hamburger mixture while my daughter made the croutons and my husband prepped the veggies and we had this on the table in less than 15 minutes.
